MAD-V
An astronaut designated “Pilot” logs thousands of hours in hyper-realistic simulators, honing split-second reactions to every malfunction, danger and flight-condition under the sun. Earn your wings in the Mars Ascent/Descent Vehicle (“MAD-V”) simulator, and learn to touch down safely on the Red Planet…every time.

Requires Flash 8 plugin
Instructions
Press the key-sequences indicated to operate the lander. Use the arrow-keys indicated to stabilize ship when needed. When near the ground, get as close as you can to the landing-site using the arrow-keys, and use the CTRL-key to fire retro-rockets.

Behind the Scenes Landing on the surface of the Red Planet is the most treacherous and terrifying part of the Mars Mission. To successfully land the Mars Ascent/Descent Vehicle (MADV) requires rapid decision-making, skill and precision. Like the simulators NASA astronaut pilots use in training, the MADV game is an intense and fast-paced reaction challenge that will test your flying and timing skills.
During gameplay you will take the MADV from Mars orbit to the surface, which involves blowing the triconic heat-shield, deploying the parachutes, keeping the vehicle balanced and using retrorockets to slow the MADV down. Once you’ve survived the mad rush to slow down, you need to get as close as you can to the landing site without crash-landing. And just to make things a little more interesting, you’ll also have to respond to environmental hazards and mechanical malfunctions with emergency procedures throughout the flight.
While gameplay is partly based on real landing procedures for robotic rovers such as NASA’s MER project, those landers have relied on airbags to soften rough landings. The MADV game instead uses sophisticated retro rockets for a powered descent, since a human crew needs a less bouncy landing.
For enhanced gameplay, this MADV simulator also uses a longer parachute sequence than would occur in an actual Mars landing. The game also reverses the order of two events for dramatic reasons: the Race to Mars mission-plan calls for the parachutes to be deployed before the aeroshell is separated. And even though the piloting astronauts would be thoroughly trained in manually landing the MADV, they would only do so if something goes wrong. Landing happens so quickly that it’s safer as an automated process. The Mission Plan calls for the piloting astronaut to take control only after the MADV slows down and is approaching the landing site. In this game you’re responsible for the whole landing sequence.
Can you manage the split-second timing of a powered descent? Can you deal with malfunctions in your state-of-the-art craft? Do you have what it takes to land your crew successfully on Mars?
